Overview: Silent 1927 production starring Zhang Huichong, a multi-talented and athletic actor who was emerging as one of China’s first martial arts stars. His co-star was actress Xuan Jinglin, a former prostitute from humble origin who was discovered a year earlier by Mingxing Film Company co-founder and the film’s director Zhang Shichuan. He went on to helm THE BURNING OF THE RED LOTUS TEMPLE (1928) series which became China’s first martial arts movie sensation. This film, along with Zhang’s tendency to cast women in most of his subsequent heroic leading parts helped establish the tradition of fighting female leads in wuxia films.
