VN:F [1.9.13_1145]
Rating: 5.5/10 (2 votes cast)

Overview: This silent short film from Ren Pengnian was the first film adaptation of the Chinese literary classic “Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio.” The same source material went on to be adapted to film many times by different filmmakers including Ching Siu-tung in A CHINESE GHOST STORY (1987) and King Hu in PAINTED SKIN (1993). It was also the first Chinese film to employ trick editing to create special effects. This paved the way for a string of supernatural-themed films during the silent era, many of them containing martial arts action.
