Overview: RED ROSE is one of two chained-sequence plays jointly produced by the Shanghai New Stage and the Kaixin Film Company in Shanghai. Chained-sequence plays were made by combining silent film footage with live stage action, both performed by the same actors. Starring Zhou Fengwen and popular Shanghai comic writer Xu Zhuodai, the production concerned a fighting Robin Hood-like character who leaves behind a red rose as a calling card. Due to the expense and nature of this experimental form of entertainment, RED ROSE was a financial disaster and not long after chained sequence plays went out of fashion.
